Summer 2019 WORKSHOPS

This summer’s workshops will take the theme of 'EXPERIMENTATION' and will  encourage you to take different approaches to drawing and painting as well as work out of your ‘comfort zone’.

These workshops are designed to link together as a series. Although they can be taken individually . They will give you the opportunity to take risks , think differently and enjoy the experience of breaking a few rules!

scroll down to read more about the workshops and  to Register .

Each workshop is 35  (take 3 workshops for 95  or all 4 for 120)

Workshop 1/    Developing  Ideas for painting

  Wandsworth community Centre,   Sat 3rd August 2019 ,10 am—4.00 pm. .    35

Where do we get our ideas?  How do we find  sources and subject matter . How and where do we look for images that best suit those  ideas? How do we go about developing these images and  ideas into a final work of art?.

This workshop will show you how to  collect, select and manipulate working  images through the use of drawing and photography and experimentation. It will also encourage you to consider what mood or ‘story’  you want to communicate through your work .

Most materials will be provided However a list of other materials required will be sent to you after registration. Tea and coffee will be provided but you will need to provide your own lunch .

Workshop 2/      Experimental Drawing ( Various media)

Wandsworth community Centre , Sat 10th  August 2019       10 am— 4.00 pm.  35

Drawing has many functions. It is used to observe and record the world. It is also used to express a mood , an idea or a story.  Most of us have been taught to think of drawing as a process using pencil or pen on paper. However  we can make marks with virtually any tool on any surface. By experimenting with materials,  we  interpret our subject in different ways and by using unfamiliar methods , we are forced to solve new technical problems.

This workshop will allow you to use a wide range of materials including  rags, torn paper and your hands!   You will make drawings from a subject and then manipulate these images to create your own idea, story or mood. You will also consider large and small scale work  as well as  the possibilities of ‘abstracting’ an image .

Most materials will be provided However a list of other materials required will be sent to you after registration. Tea and coffee will be provided but you will need to provide your own lunch .

Workshop 3/   Experimental Painting  ( Various media)

Wandsworth community Centre , Sat 17th  August 2019       10 am—4.00 pm.  35

This workshop is a useful follow on from the Drawing workshop. However it can also be taken on its own. It is a challenging session designed for those who wish to take risks and step outside their  normal way of working.

We often develop a method of painting which we feel comfortable with. Whilst this can be successful and satisfying, we often miss out on discovering the enjoyment and usefulness of other ways to manipulate and combine other painting materials

Drawing on the work of some important artists in history, you will experiment with different ways to manipulate paint. This will include the use of different surfaces to paint on. You will  combine other materials with paint and consider the value of ‘destroying’ an image in order to change it .

Basic materials will be provided However a list of other materials required will be sent to you after registration. Tea and coffee will be provided but you will need to provide your own lunch

Workshop 4/  Outdoor Landscape Painting  ( experimenting with viewpoints and materials)

Delamont Country Park, Sat 24th   August 2019 , 10.00 am—4.30 pm.  35

This workshop will allow you to work outdoors, directly from the landscape. However you will be encouraged to experiment with the viewpoint , materials and scale of work you choose . We will consider less obvious views of the landscape and we will work with different tools such as pallette knives and sponges. You will have the opportunity to  develop more 'abstract' studies and produce a painting on a larger scale if you wish!

The day will begin with making small paintings  and studies directly from the landscape using a range of different tools . In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to develop these images onto a much larger scale in an indoor environment .

Some  materials will be provided However you will also be required to bring your own paints , brushes, boards and easel etc. a list of other materials required will be sent to you after registration. Tea and coffee will be provided but you will need to provide your own lunch .
